Taking advantage of the three-day weekend in celebration of Marine Day, my wife and I took a brief overnight excursion to the Manazuru area, in Kanagawa Prefecture to the South of Tokyo.
As I have written about before, I am a firm believer in the power of hot spring baths to maintain physical and mental health, and we took full advantage of the facilities in our hotel.
I always enjoy learning about the local history of the places I visit, and for all of its low-key charm, Manazuru didn’t disappoint. It was on this trip that I learned about Minamoto no Yoritomo.
Yoritomo was a prominent figure in the late 12th century in Japan. He was part of the Minamoto clan, which was in conflict with the Taira clan. After a major defeat, he was exiled and hid in a cave in the Manazuru area.
Despite his setback, he didn’t give up. He built alliances, learned from his experiences, and eventually rose to power, founding the famous Kamakura shogunate. His journey teaches us about resilience, strategic thinking, and the importance of perseverance in leadership.
Just like Yoritomo had to rebuild alliances and inspire loyalty, HR professionals today often have to foster teamwork and trust within their diverse teams. They also navigate challenges such as organizational changes and need resilience to adapt and guide others through transitions. Yoritomo’s story of overcoming setbacks, building alliances, and leading through adversity can inspire HR professionals today to stay resilient, adaptable, and focused on building strong, supportive workplace cultures.
I didn’t expect that this weekend excursion would provide a leadership lesson, but sometimes opportunities to learn appear in unexpected circumstances.
